This excellent 2006 compilation presents many of the finest moments by R&B/soul singer Etta James. Given James's bold, full-bodied vocals, she was a natural for the blues, but she made her biggest mark in the 1960s with lush, pop-tinged ballads such as the gorgeous "At Last" and the forlorn "All I Could Do Was Cry," both included here. Although HER BEST features many of the same songs, and THE ESSENTIAL JAMES is more extensive, THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION offers a remarkably wide selection, even including material from her 1994 Grammy-winning Billie Holiday tribute, MYSTERY LADY.

Cumulo Nimbus - 47 Times It's Own Weight

Funky and free-thinking fusion from the Texas scene of the mid 70s -- a great indie album by a group who travelled in the same territory as the soul combo Starcrost! Although American, the work here has some great qualities that remind us of some of the best European fusion from the same time -- a sense of soaring, stretching energy -- and one that never resorts to too much jamming to carry across its message, and which juxtaposes heavier rhythms with some gentler tunes that really allow the horn parts some wonderful moments! Instrumentation include soprano sax, tenor, trumpet, electric and acoustic piano, and a fair bit of percussion too -- all recorded with a great sense of warmth, almost in the mode of some of the best Fantasy Records 70s sessions!

Seminal 80s groove from 70s Miami soul star Gwen McCrae -- reinventing herself here for the new decade with a totally different sound! The album's best known for the amazing club track "Funky Sensation" -- one of those tracks that crossed over big, and had a huge influence in countless scenes -- as the tune burned big on all fronts, including the worlds of disco, hip hop, and even roller skating! Other tunes follow in a similar format -- with lots of nice snapping rhythms, thanks to arranger/composer/producer Kenton Nix -- who really manages to break Gwen out of the standard Miami soul groove!
