The Poets Of Rythm - Discern-Define

Long established as the band that duped so many funk enthusiasts in the early 90s with their authentic 45s and homage to original valve-recording techniques, the Poets of Rhythm realign after a recording hiatus for their Ninja debut, Define/Discern. Still underwriting their fascination with the "F"-word by means of agile musicianship and original motifs, Define/Discern mainly carries on where they left off. But, in a trendy push toward rare sources of inspiration, the band have invaded Africa (among other places); "Afrobeat", for example, is an acknowledgment of the dark continent mixed with well-worn funk and breaks. A good half of this album underpins itself with hallmark tribal accents, as the band take on Tony Allen and Fela Kuti for more inspiration. Discern/Define does stand its ground as an authentic piece, though it seems to lack some of the spontaneous energy and unreserved experimentation of their past releases. "Fondle Rock" and "Moira" are attempts at improvisation and layering (the latter a blast of early Marimba-led Earth Wind & Fire), though mostly, this is an album which reaffirms the Poets' commitment to knocking out steadfast funky and soulful grooves.
