Hip hop, drum-and-bass, Miles Davis/acid jazz, and New Orleans funk wrapped around a twisted blues--and that's just the first cut from Brooklyn Funk Essentials' MAKE THEM LIKE IT. Disciples of the downbeat will want to seek out and sample this groovadelic gospel of worldbeat fusion and straight-up party-down delights.
If you like your jelly on the JBs tip, "Kik It" does just that; "Mambo Con Dancehall" offers deep drags off an Afro-Cuban cigar, and the outer-space ska of "Jump Around Sound" will have you out of your seat. The multi-cultural 11-piece BFE performs sprawling organic jams laced with echo-soaked horn solos, soaring soul diva vocals, live drums, and some of the tightest bass playing this side of Bootsy Collins. Ace trombonist Josh Roseman gives the horn section a Fred Wesley-type lift, and things turn comical when vocalist Everton Sylvester delivers his cool rudeboy hype with the flair of a beat poet. MAKE THEM LIKE IT should finally spread the word on BFE's music beyond the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge.
