Nina Simone - Live In Paris

Nina Simone (vocals); Samuel Waymon (vocals, organ); Jimmy Young (guitar); Jim Taylor (bass); Bob Clark (drums).
Hearing the amazing Nina Simone in concert can be a truly electrifying, magical, and intensely emotional event. Simone has been dubbed "the high priestess of soul," and fans regard her concerts as near-mystical experiences. In programs that are eclectic and richly varied, Simone channels the mighty spirits of song.

This is middle-period Nina in her prime. The signature finger-poppin' shuffle of "Just in Time" is a concert standout, and you can hear Simone humorously berating the audience for taking pictures. A bone-chilling, absolutely devastating version of Sebastian Mure's "When I Was a Young Girl" finds Simone alone at the piano. It's a brilliant segue into her classic, African-flavored arrangement of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (Simone's version inspired The Animals' hit recording of the song). The concert also features an utterly heart-wrenching French-language rendition of Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas," a wonderful voice-and-percussion presentation of Simone staple "See-Line Woman," and her hit "Aint Got No/I Got Life" (from HAIR).
